BLACKSBURG, VA - University of Richmond (3-2) midfielder Kristy Gallagher (Chatsworth, N.J.) netted the go-ahead goal with less than two minutes remaining to lift the Spiders to a 10-9 victory over #21 Virginia Tech (1-2)in women's lacrosse action Friday afternoon at Moseley Field on the campus of Virginia Tech.
In a contest that saw seven ties, the Hokies attemptedthree shots on goal in the final minute but were unable to score. Richmond scored just :39 seconds into the game when junior Katie Dolan (Towson, Md.) tallied her sixth goal of the season. The two teams traded goals until Richmond senior Carrie Aitken (Paxton, Mass.) knocked home her first goal of the afternoon at the 7:23 mark to give UR a 4-2 advantage. The Hokies would respond, scoring three straight goals in a three minute span, two from Lacey Dieringer, and adding two more from Samantha Sybert to Richmond's one to take the lead by two (7-5) at the 25:52 mark. A late goal from Aitken would pull Richmond to within one (7-6) at the break.
Richmond scored the first two goals of the second half, one from sophomore Polly Purcell (Elliott City, Md.) and Aitken's third of the day and 12th of the season , to take an 8-7 lead, before the teams traded goals the remainder of the game. Gallagher tallied two of her game-high three scores in the second stanza. The Spiders outshot the Hokies, 40-34, on the afternoon.
