WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Richmond Spiders kicked off their 2002 Lacrosse campaign with a 15-6 loss at NCAA national runner-up, Georgetown (1-0, 0-0) on Friday afternoon, 15-6 at Kehoe Field.
Senior attacker Carrie Aitken (Paxton, Mass/ St. Mark's) paced the Spiders with three goals but Georgetown proved too much for Richmond. Senior midfielder Kate Ahearn scored just 53 seconds into the game for Georgetown, followed by another goal to give the Hoyas the advantage. Aitken answered for the Spiders with 16:56 remaining in the first half. Richmond narrowed the lead to 4-2 with eight minutes into the first stanza. However, the Hoyas outscored their guests 8-2 in the first half. The Spiders first half scoring came from Aitkin and senior attacker Alexis Brandolini (Berwyn, Pa./ Notre Dame Academy).
Richmond came out firing in the second half with junior Katie Dolan (Towson, Md./ Towson), taking a feed from sophomore Libby Berlacher (Villanova, Pa./ Agnes Irwin) at the 28:43 mark. Aitken netted her second goal of the day with 21:24 on the clock to pull the Spider within six, 10-4. They could get no closer as the Hoyas erupted on a 5-0 scoring run to put the game out of reach. The Spiders scored twice more in the second half, another Aitken tally and sophomore transfer attacker Polly Purcell's (Ellicott City, Md./ Mt. Hebron) first goal in a Spiders uniform.
