Women's Lacrosse Crushes American, 21-7

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. (March 5)-Richmond posted its first win of the 2002 season, and in convincing fashion, throttling American University, 21-7 on Tuesday afternoon at President's Field. Senior attack Carrie Aitken (Paxton, Mass./St. Mark's School) scored four goals and added two assists while three other Spiders tallied hat tricks, netting three goals a piece.
Richmond took the lead for good just 2:52 into the game as junior Kristy Gallagher (Chatsworth, N.J./Cherry Hill East) rolled the crease and drove, scoring unassisted her first goal of the season. Aitken sprinted the field on a fast break, easily registering her fifth goal of the season less than three minutes later. She would assist on the next score, a Mandy Bourquin (Lutherville, Md./Notre Dame Prep) goal. American would tally its first score, a Nadia Harmsen goal, to cut the advantage to 3-1. Richmond erupted for two consecutive goals in a 46 second span. Gallagher and Aitken notched a pair of consecutive goals, at the 14:03 and the 14:49 mark to built UR's lead to 6-1. The Eagles would get as close as six in the half (9-3) after a Lindsey Carmichael score however Richmond would again respond. Junior Katie Dolan (Towson, Md./Towson) scored two straight, a free position and off a feed from senior Tracy Ransome (Marlton, N.J./Moorestown Friends), to give Richmond a comfortable advantage. Ransome's strike with :06 left in the half put UR up 11-4. Richmond scored first in the second but AU would again close to seven after an Adele Fenwich score. The Spiders erupted offensively over the next 10 minutes of play, scoring nine unanswered goals. Aitken fed a streaking Polly Purcell (Ellicott City, Md./Boston U.) at the 35:08 mark to begin the run. Senior Alexis Brandolini (Berwyn, Pa./Notre Dame) would fire from 10 yards out on the right side les than 30 seconds later as Richmond never relented. Richmond held AU to just 13 total shots and converted its own, scoring on 17 of its 25 shots in the game. They added three free position goals.
