03/30/2002 | Women's Lacrosse
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. (March 30) - Richmond saw an early 2-0 lead disappear as #16 Johns Hopkins erupted for 10 second-half scores to post a 14-8 victory at President's Field on Saturday afternoon in women's college lacrosse action. For the Spiders (6-4) leading the way was senior Carrie Aitken (Paxton, Mass.) who scored twice and added an assist. The Blue Jays (6-4) were paced by senior Jamie Larrimore and sophomore Heidi Pearce who netted five goals a piece.
Richmond jumped out early as sophomore Polly Purcell (Ellicott City, Md.) kept alive her streak of games with at least one goal scored, notching the first goal of the game at the 2:30 mark. A picture perfect play as Richmond midfielder Kristy Gallagher's (Chatsworth, N.J.) caused turnover led to the next score. Defender Tracy Ransome (Marlton, N,J.) cleared up the right side finding junior Katie Dolan (Towson, Md.) for the 2-0 lead. Hopkins answered less than four minutes later as Larrimore scored the first of her five goals on the day, a free position score. The Blue Jays took their first lead at the 14:15 mark when a foul away from ball gave freshman Anne Crisafulli a free shot. She converted to give the visitors a 3-2 edge. Dolan's second goal of the game, a free position, knotted the score at 3-3 with 15:48 to play in the first half. Excellent defense on both sides limited scoring opportunities as Hopkins finally broke through with 1:53 to play in the stanza, a free position goal from Pearce. Twenty-four seconds later, Richmond senior attacker Alexis Brandolini (Berwyn, Pa.), off a feed from sophomore Jen Cielewich (Severna Park, Md.), knotted the score yet again (4-4) at the break.
The Spiders failed to convert three free position attempts in a two-minute span mid-way through the second half as Hopkins built its lead to four (8-4) with 14:10 to play. Richmond converted its first FPS of the second stanza, an Aitken shot into the right corner (8-5) with just over 12 minutes remaining. The Spiders would nail their next two free shots, a Brandolini netter and a Mandy Bourquin (Lutherville, Md.) score, in a minute span. Aitken's unassisted score in the right side at the 54:17 mark would pull the Spiders to within in one (9-8). That would be as close as the home team would get as Hopkins behind the play of Larrimore and Pearce closed the door. Larrimore added three scores and Pearce two in the final six minutes of play to preserve the victory.
Richmond begins its first run in the Atlantic 10 this Friday, hosting last year's A-10 Champion Temple. Game time at President's Field is 3:30 p.m.
