UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. (April 5) - The University of Richmond dropped its first Atlantic 10 contest of the season, a 12-11 overtime loss to the Temple Friday afternoon at President's Field. Sophomore Polly Purcell (Ellicott City, Md.), the A-10's point's leader, who recorded two goals and two assists led the Spiders on the afternoon while teammate Carrie Aitken (Paxton, Mass.) registered her seventh hat trick of the season (three goals). Pacing the Owls was junior Deanna Radcliffe with three scores while teammate Noelle Cebron was one of three Temple players to net two goals. Cebron knocked in the winning goal with 47 seconds remaining in the second overtime to lift Temple to their first conference victory of the 2002 season.
The seesaw battle between the new conference rivals began early. The Owls struck first (1:56) as Cebron's skip shot put the visitors up 1-0. Richmond responded with two consecutive goals in a 1:05 span and another less than nine minutes into the contest to give UR a two goals advantage (3-1). Aitken netted the first three scores, two unassisted and the third off a pass from Purcell. The Owls would reel off of the next three scores. A Liz Frengs goal followed by Radcliffe's second of the day in a: 30 span would give TU a 4-3 edge with 13:07 remaining in the half. Purcell's free position goal knotted the score at 4-4 with just over seven minutes in the stanza. However, Temple would run off three straight scores. Tiffany Pulaski's goal with 19 seconds to go lifted the Owls to a 7-4 lead. Junior Katie Dolan's (Towson, Md.) ringer for Richmond with eight ticks on the clock pulled UR to within two at the break, (7-5).
The Spiders offense ignited in the second half. Trailing by one goal, Richmond registered a textbook play, winning the draw and sprinting downfield. Aitken at the top of the circle fed Dolan on the right side who in turn spotted senior Alexis Brandolini (Berwyn, Pa.) on the left side of the cage for the open and game-tying goal (7-7). Midfielder Jen Cielewich (Severna Park, Md.) free position and Purcell's bounce shot gave the Spiders a 9-7 lead with 12:43 left in the game. Temple would not go away, Pulaski fired dead center at the 49:45 mark to tie the game for the fifth time of the afternoon. The two teams traded goals yet again to knot at 10-10. Richmond would have two free position attempts for the win in the final two minutes but Temple goalkeeper Sheena Oommen played spoiler.
Temple midfielder Jen Jefferson scored just 28 seconds into the extra stanza. Richmond sophomore Libby Berlacher (Villanova, Pa.) eight-meter free position with 35 seconds remaining forced the second 3-minute OT. Cebron's winning goal came as she rolled around the cage from the right, firing high into the right side. The Spiders would have opportunities, including a free position attempt with: 24 second remaining, Oommen's 18th save on the day. Her counterpart Kelly Johnson had 16 saves for the Spiders.
Richmond entertains UMass on Sunday at 12:00 at President's Field.
