UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond women's lacrosse team fell to the 8th ranked Virginia Cavaliers Friday afternoon, 18-4, at President's Field. A run of eight-straight Cavalier goals in the first half was too much for the Spiders to overcome. Sophomore midfielder/attack Libby Berlacher (Villanova, Pa./Agnes Irwin School) led Richmond with two goals.
The Spiders (1-2) would jump out early in the contest, as sophomore attack Polly Purcell (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) gave Richmond a 1-0 lead. The Spiders would do a good job controlling the ball, keeping the Cavaliers off the scoreboard until the 9:52 mark when Cavalier junior midfielder Lauren Aumiller scored one of her six goals on the afternoon to knot the game at 1-1. Over the next 15 minutes, Virginia (3-1) scored seven unanswered, including two by both sophomore attack Caitlin Banks and senior attack Gina Sambus, to build an 8-1 lead. Berlacher ended the run five minutes before the half, as the Spiders trailed 10-2 at the intermission.
Virginia then scored the first four goals of the second half to put the game away as the Spiders went over 20 minutes without a goal. In addition to Berlacher's second tally of the game, junior midfielder Kristy Gallagher (Chatsworth, N.J./Cherry Hills East) found the back of the net with just over two minutes to play as the Spiders fell, 18-4. Junior goalkeeper Kelly Johnson (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) was solid in goal for Richmond as she turned away 15 Cavalier shots, including numerous point-blank attempts. Andrea Pfeiffer had six saves for Virginia and Liz McCarthy had two.
Richmond returns to action this Sunday, March 10, at 1:00 p.m. as the Spiders face Northwestern in a game that will be played at Johns Hopkins University.
