PITTSBURGH - The University of Richmond improved to 3-1 in Atlantic 10 play downing Duquesne, 17-5 on Friday afternoon at Rooney Field. Senior attacker Carrie Aitken (Paxton, Mass.) led Richmond with five goals while sophomore Polly Purcell (Ellicott City, Md.) added four scores.
The Dukes opened up a 2-0 lead after 18 minutes of play. Richmond would get its first goal of the contest off a Purcell free position in the 20th minute. Aitken tied the contest at 2-2 less than two minutes later. Richmond took the lead for good off a Katie Dolan (Towson, Md.) score with 1:45 to go before the half. Aitken's second goal of the half with :05 left before the break would give UR a 4-2 lead at the half.
Duquesne closed the gap to one after a Laura App score just over a minute into the second stanza, but Richmond fired back scoring two straight goals to pull out to a 6-3 advantage after sophomore midfielder Libby Berlacher (Villanova, Pa) netted a free position. After a Dukes score at the 37:14 mark, the Spiders rattled off six goals in a 13 minute span (four goals in a six-minute run) to pull out to a comfortable lead.
Richmond next travels to Olean, N.Y. for a Sunday afternoon contest at St. Bonaventure (Noon).
