UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Katie Karhohs of East Grand Rapids, Mich. has selected the University of Richmond as her college destination. The star tennis recruit should have an immediate impact on the women's tennis program as head coach Mark Wesselink and the Spiders look forward to having the three-time state singles champion in a Richmond uniform.
"We are thrilled to be adding Katie to our team," says Wesselink. "She brings a very mature and polished all-court game that will allow her to make an easy transition into college tennis. In addition, Katie's work ethic and team values fit well with our philosophy, so she'll will fit right in."
While at East Grand Rapids High School, Karhohs helped lead her team to three Division 3 state championships, as a freshman, sophomore, and senior (when she went 21-0). These same years, she won the Michigan Division 3 individual championship at the No. 1 singles position, while finishing as the runner-up in her junior season. She was named all-conference and all-state each of her four years in high school and was selected as the team's captain in her senior campaign. A highly rated player on a national level, Karhohs was ranked by the USTA as high as No. 19 in the Girls' 16s and No. 5 as a doubles player.
The addition of Karhos to the Spiders, who will not lose any players from this year's team to graduation, should make for an exciting 2002-03 season, as the soon-to-be freshman will surely contribute to Richmond's success.
"Katie's double's skills are formidable and her ability to attack in singles makes her a really fun player to both coach and watch," says Wesselink. "We can't wait to have her out on the court for us."
Karhos reciprocated this sentiment, saying she is looking forward to her arrival at the small, private university. "I love the campus, I love the coach and I love the girls," she said.
In addition to Karhohs' success on the tennis court, Richmond gets a student-athlete who also excels in the classroom as Katie was a member of the National Honor Society and earned a spot on the academic honor roll for four years.
Karhohs also garnered all-conference honorable mention honors for three years in golf and was part of a state championship team.
