COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Richmond women's tennis team put on an impressive display in its first round match of the Verizon Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championship, blanking the Fordham Rams, 4-0, in a quarterfinal match played in College Park, Md. The Spiders won their two doubles matches by a combined score of 16-2 and then dominated the three completed singles matches, winning 36-3.
The day began with sophomores Jeannette Cluskey (Edina, Minn./Edina) and Patty Devlin (York, Pa./York Suburban) teaming to post a shutout at No. 2 doubles, 8-0. At the No. 3 position, juniors Casey Cohen (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./The Bolles School) and Monika Peets (Tallinn, Estonia/Tallinn Science), recently back from injury, combined for an 8-2 victory, giving the Spiders a 1-0 lead.
Richmond, the No. 1 seed, continued to overpower the No. 8 seeded Rams as the Spiders had little trouble in the singles competition. Freshman Lindsay Cox (Finchampstead, Workingham Berks, UK/Edgbarrow) blanked her opponent at the No. 3 spot to improve to 13-6 this spring, while fellow freshman Courtney Klein (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East) also breezed to victory, winning 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 5 position. Devlin picked up an easy win at the No. 6 spot, 6-0, 6-1.
The win improved Richmond to 3-0 in conference action this season, winning these matches by a combined score of 17-1. In tomorrow's semifinals, which will be played at 10:30 a.m., the Spiders will face the winner of today's No. 4 Duquesne/No. 5 Dayton match-up. Richmond defeated Duquesne earlier this season by a score of 7-0.
