COLLEGE PARK, MD - Top-seeded Richmond overcame No. 3 Xavier and rainy conditions to claim its first-ever tennis championship, 4-0, on Sunday at the 20th Annual Verizon Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championship at the Tennis Center at College Park in College Park, MD.
The two teams began doubles play at 11:00am but the matches were moved inside mid-way through due to rain. Junior Monika Peets (Tallinn, Estonia) and freshman Courtney Klein (East Amherst, NY) were victorious at the No. 3 position, 9-7, over Xavier's Lindsay Dressman (Edgewood, KY) and Katy Wiles (Massillon, OH) to give UR the critical doubles point.
In singles action, Vanessa Bagnato (Manhasset, NY), Lindsay Cox (Workingham Berks, England) and Patty Devlin (York, PA) were victorious to propel the Spiders to the title. The Musketeers placed second overall, their highest finish ever in the championship.
"We knew were playing a very inspired team in Xavier and it was a great momentum boost to get the doubles point since all three matches were close and well played," said Richmond head coach Mark Wesselink.
"Our team played a very tough schedule this season and that really helped us in this championship. I am proud of the confidence and poise the team displayed throughout our matches and to win the Atlantic 10 Championship."
Earlier in the day, Massachusetts defeated Temple, 4-1, to claim seventh place while Duquesne edged out Fordham, 4-3, for fifth place. George Washington, the second seed, defeated No. 5 Dayton, 4-0 (forfeit) for third place.
