UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -University of Richmond senior attacker Carrie Aitken (Paxton, Mass.) scored a season-high five goals to lead the Spiders to a 10-8 win over UMass in Atlantic 10 women's lacrosse action on Sunday afternoon at President's Field. Junior midfielder Kristy Gallagher (Chatsworth, N.J.) registered her third hat trick of the season, recording three goals on the afternoon. With the win, Richmond improves to 7-5, 2-1 in the Atlantic 10 while UMass falls to 6-4, 3-1 in A-10 action.
A free position goal from Gallagher just 52 seconds into the game proved got the Spiders on the board first. Gallagher would contribute in the next score, forcing a UMass turnover and turning the ground ball over to fellow classmate Katie Dolan (Towson, Md.) who streaked down the left side and fired direct for a 2-0 lead. Richmond stretched its lead to 4-0 following a Libby Berlacher (Villanova, Pa.) skip shot and an Aitken rip from seven yards out. The Minutewomen countered with its first two scores in a 34 second span. Sophomore Hope Zellinger's netter in the 12th minute pulled the visitors to within two, 4-2. The Spiders answered scoring four times in a four-minute span, two goals each from Aitken and Gallagher. Aitken netted her third score of the half with 4:26 remaining in the stanza to lift UR to an 8-2 halftime lead.
Richmond could not sustain the UMass attack in the second half. The Minutewomen stormed back, exploding for six unanswered goals to knot the score. UMass junior midfielder Jada Emery found the right corner of the cage in the 46th minute to pull the Minutewomen to within one, 8-7. The visitors won the ensuing draw as Bridget Byrne drove the crease and tied the contest (8-8) with less than 12 minutes remaining. Aitken, fouled, converted the 12-meter giving the Spiders a lead they would not relinquish. The senior co-captain added to her tally, four minutes later rolling to the right and delivering a score high just inside the post. Aitken would continue her exceptional play, scooping up the ensuing draw as Richmond ran the clock out.
The Spiders hit the road this weekend in Atlantic 10 play, traveling to Duquesne on Friday, April 12 for a 3:30 p.m. contest. On Sunday, April 14 the Spiders are at St. Bonaventure for a Noon face-off.
