UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, VA - After two scoreless overtime periods the University of Richmond was defeated by New Hampshire, 3-2, after a series of penalty strokes.
Richmond held a 1-0 halftime lead after sophomore Danica Haupt (West Chester, Pa.) scored her first career goal at the 23:00 minute mark when she tipped the ball into the goal on the ride side. Seniors Jill Murphy (Williamsburg, Va.) and Kristin Gavin (Roseland, NJ) were both credited with assists.
New Hampshire tied the game 1-1 at the beginning of the second half with a goal by Jen Stamp. Richmond answered with a goal from junior Brittney Parrish (Louisville, Ky.) off a penalty corner. Freshman Michelle La Force assisted on the goal.
Jen Stamp scored her second goal of the game for New Hampshire at the 50:31 mark, which tied the game at 2-2.
The game was decided with a series of penalty strokes after both teams failed to score in the two overtime periods. Richmond shot first and scored two points, from junior Michelle La Force (Centreville, Va.). New Hampshire had three players score and was able to hold on for the victory after goalie Christine Buckley protected the goal against Richmond's final shot.
Richmond goalie Michelle Swartz (Severna Park, Md) had four saves and New Hampshire goalie Christine Buckley recorded eight saves on the afternoon.
The Spiders return to action on Sunday, September 15, when they travel to Williamsburg, Va. to take on William and Mary at 2 pm.
