Field Hockey Shut Out by William and Mary

Williamsburg, Va. - The University of Richmond field hockey team was unable to overcome a slow start in their 3-0 loss to William and Mary this afternoon. The Spiders now fall to 1-4 on the season, while William and Mary improves to 2-4.
William and Mary opened the game strong when sophomore Jill Hocutt was able to put the Tribe on the scoreboard with her goal off a penalty corner just 2:03 into the game. The Tribe took a 2-0 lead when sophomore Ginny Sutton scored just eleven minutes later. Senior Ann Ekberg contributed the Tribe's third goal near the end of the first half.
Richmond was limited to just five shots on the afternoon as William and Mary's defense held strong throughout the entire game.
Spider goalie freshman Michelle Swartz (Severna Park, Md.) recorded five saves and William and Mary goalkeeper Claire Miller made three saves on the way to recording her second shutout of the season.
Richmond returns home on Wednesday, September 18th, when they take on 9th ranked Virginia at 5 pm.
