UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, VA - Senior Sarah Adams (Tulsa, Okla.) scored two goals to lead the Spiders to a 2-1 victory over 11th ranked Virginia. The win marks the first time in program history that Richmond has prevailed over the Cavaliers.
Adam's first goal came early in the first half at the 4:58 mark off a penalty corner. Senior Jill Murphy (Williamsburg, Va.) and junior Brittney Parrish (Louisville, Ky.) combined to assist on the goal. The Spider defense held strong in the first half, limiting Virginia to only three shots.
Richmond increased the lead to 2-0 at the 53:48 point when Adam's connected on her second goal, again off a penalty corner. Murphy and Parrish were credited with their second assists on the goal.
Virginia responded within five minutes when junior Katie Nicholson tipped the ball in the net to make the score 2-1. Senior Kelli Hill assisted on the play.
Richmond goalie Michelle Swartz (Severna Park, Md.) recorded three saves for the game. Goalkeeper Emily White had eight saves for the Cavaliers.
Richmond will be back in action at home on Friday, September 20, as they take on the Davidson Wildcats. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
