University of Richmond, VA - Junior Lydia Decembrino scored the game-winner and recorded one assist as she helped lead the Spiders to a 2-0 victory over American University in the 2002 season opener at Crenshaw Field.
After a scoreless first half, Decembrino put the Spiders ahead at the 46:55 mark. Decembrino scored on a deflection from teammate Sarah Adams' shot after a penalty corner. Senior Jill Murphy also assisted on the goal.
The Spiders second goal, also on a penalty corner, was scored by Adams at the 55:42 mark. Murphy recorded her second assist of the game and Decembrino also contributed to the effort.
In her collegiate debut, Spider freshman Michelle Swartz tallied seven saves and posted her first shutout. American goalie, Laura Miller, also recorded seven saves, all in the second half.
The Eagles outshot the Spiders 5-4 in the first half of play, but the Spiders responded and dominated the second half, outshooting American 13-5.
Richmond travels to Newark, Del. next weekend to face Villanova (Sept. 7) and Delaware (Sept. 8). Both games will begin at 2 p.m.
