Field Hockey Falls to #8 James Madison, 2-1

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond senior Sarah Adams (Tulsa, Okla.) scored her fourth goal of the season this afternoon, but it wasn't enough as the Spiders were defeated by eighth-ranked James Madison University, 2-1. JMU improves to a 6-3 record, while Richmond falls to 3-6.
JMU took a 1-0 lead at the 23:25 mark when sophomore Veerlee Goudswaard fired the ball past Spider goalie Michelle Swartz (Severna Park, Md.) into the left corner of the goal. Less than a minute later, Richmond evened the score at 1-1 off a penalty corner goal by Adams. Senior Jill Murphy (Williamsburg, Va.) and junior Brittney Parrish (Louisville, Ky.) were credited with assists.
Shortly into the second half, junior Valerie Cohen scored the Duke's game-winning goal after a scramble inside the circle. Goudswaard assisted on the play.
JMU outshot the Spiders 13-9 and recorded 11 penalty corners to Richmond's four.
Richmond goalie Swartz had six saves for the game.
Richmond faces the Towson University Tigers Sunday afternoon at Crenshaw Field. Game time is scheduled for 2 pm.
