UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Teamwork was the key as five Richmond players scored in the Spiders' 5-0 victory over Towson University. Richmond improves to 4-6 on the season, while Towson falls to 6-3.
Richmond took a 1-0 lead early after freshman Whitney Wells (Clayton, Del.) scored less than two minutes into the first period. Wells' goal came after a scramble around the box and was assisted by junior Brittney Parrish (Louisville, Ky.).
After halftime, the Spiders went on a scoring frenzy with four goals during a fifteen -minute span. Melissa Yuppa (Fairfield, N.J.) scored her first goal as Spider when she was able to knock the ball high into the goal at the 43:36 mark. Freshman Michelle La Force (Centreville, Va.) and junior Jill Murphy (Williamsburg, Va.) were credited with assists. Within two minutes, senior Sarah Adams (Tulsa, Okla.) increased the lead to 3-0 when she scored off a penalty corner. Murphy and junior Lydia Decembrino (Hummelstown, Pa.) assisted on the goal.
La Force connected on the goal at the 56:47 mark after her first shot was deflected by Towson goalkeeper Loren Wolf. Richmond set the final margin at 5-0 when Parrish tapped the ball past Wolf just two minutes later.
The Spiders dominated on offense, outshooting the Tigers 32-3 and taking 16 penalty corners to Towson's seven. Richmond goalie Michelle Swartz (Severna Park, Md) registered one save to record her third shutout of the season. For the Tigers, Wolf had 13 saves.
