DeCesare Joins Richmond Men's Basketball Staff

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -Standout prep school coach Gary DeCesare has been named assistant men's basketball coach at the University of Richmond, head coach Jerry Wainwright announced today. DeCesare, the highly successful head coach at St. Raymond's High School in Bronx, New York, completes Wainwright's staff.
"The University of Richmond has a tremendous program in an exceptional conference," says DeCesare. "I look forward to working with Coach Wainwright and his staff."
DeCesare, 39, compiled a 286-142 record (.668 winning percentage) in 16 seasons at the helm of St. Raymond's. In DeCesare's first season as head coach (1986), he led the Ravens to a 20-6 mark, including the New York Archdiocesan Championship. Since then, the national powerhouse has won four New York City Championships (1991, 1993, 2000, 2001) and two state championships (1993, 2001). In addition, DeCesare has been named New York State Coach of the Year on three occasions (1987, 1991, 2001). He was selected the 1993 Kodak Boys Coach of the Year and in 2000 received coach of the year accolades from the New York Daily News, New York Post and New York Newsday for the fourth time in his esteemed career.
Under DeCesare, the St. Raymond's program has produced 28 Division I basketball players. The list includes three McDonald's All-Americans- Majestic Mapp (Virginia), Julius Hodge (N.C. State) and Kareem Reid (Arkansas).
A graduate of St. Raymond's and Iona College (N.Y.), Decesare was the head coach for the East team at USA Basketball's 2002 Men's Youth Development Festival. Since 1996, he has served as executive director of the New York Raven Summer Basketball League and Director of adidas ABCD Basketball Camp since 1993.
DeCeasare and his wife Pam are the parents of three, three-year old twins, Gary Michael and Thomas John (TJ) and four-week-old Amanda Lynn.
