DAYTON, Ohio - Richmond senior Jeff Myers netted 15 points, 12 on three-pointers, but the Spiders fell 66-53 at Dayton in a match-up of the top two teams in the Atlantic 10 West Division, on Wednesday night. Dayton's Brooks Hall delighted the 12,105 in attendance with 13 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.
The Flyers, who also received double-digit efforts from three other players, shot 52.1 percent from the field (25-of-48), including 46.7 percent from behind the arc (7-of-15). Richmond, who continually fought through a suffocating defense, shot 38.3 percent from the field (23-of-60), and only managed one free throw. Myers sunk that try from the charity stripe after drilling a trey from the baseline with 5:49 remaining in the contest.
Dayton and Richmond slugged through a close first half, with the Flyers holding a nine-point advantage (29-20) at 5:16 on a D.J. Stelly three-pointer. Junior Tony Dobbins and Myers closed the gap to five, but the Flyers scored the next three points to lead 32-24 at intermission. Junior Eric Zwayer netted eight first-half points and finished with 12, his sixth double-digit performance of the season.
Mark Jones and Ramod Marshall nailed back-to-back triples to open the second half and give the home squad a 14-point advantage. A Dobbins layup quieted the racous crowd at 18:26 and a Zwayer jumper brought the Spiders within 10 (38-28) with 17:24 to play.
The Spiders cut the lead to eight points on a jumper from freshman Will Holloman at 13:06 (42-34), but they would get no closer. Nate Green stuffed Zwayer's layup attempt and Dayton flew in transition to a Seann Finn layup that capped an 8-0 run to increase the lead to 16 (50-34) at 9:26.
The outside game came alive in the final six minutes as Richmond sunk four of its final six field goals from beyond the arc. Dayton remained composed and never let the lead slip below 11 points.
Myers equaled a season high with seven assists that he matched in the season-opener against Radford. Dobbins set a season-high with five steals.
Richmond returns to action at 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 18 against Duquesne in the Dukes' A.J. Palumbo Center. Dayton resumes A-10 action at George Washington on January 18.
