Women's Hoops Tops Dayton, 79-60

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond women's basketball team defeated University of Dayton, 79-60, in Atlantic 10 action this afternoon at the Robins Center. Richmond improves to 12-4, 3-2 in conference play while Dayton falls to 9-7, 2-3 in the Atlantic 10.
Senior Ebony Tanner (Garner, N.C.) recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Spiders. Junior Amber Goppert (Malone, N.Y.) scored 18 points and dished out nine assists for the second consecutive game. Cammy Desmond (Midlothian, Va.) contributed 14 points and sophomore Kate Flavin (Englewood, Colo.) grabbed 18 rebounds.
The Spiders took a five-point advantage off a Desmond basket with 15:54 on the clock before Dayton went on a 13-5 scoring run to build a three-point lead, the Flyer's largest of the game. A lay-up from Goppert tied the game (21-21) at the 6:41 mark and Richmond's defense held Dayton scoreless over the following three minutes. The Spiders built an eight-point lead but a basket from Sarah Schloss cut the deficit to three before the halftime score was set at 36-31.
Dayton missed its first three shots of the second half, allowing Richmond to build a nine-point lead with 16 minutes remaining. The Flyers would get as close as five but a Desmond jumper and back-back lay-ups from Tanner gave the Spiders their first double-digit lead of the game (11). Dayton twice cut the lead to nine but Richmond kept the lead in double-figures for the remainder of play. A fast break lay-up from Nastassia Alcius set the score at 67-57 with 3:59 on the clock, but the Flyers would miss their next eight shots as Richmond cruised to the 79-60 victory.
Richmond out-rebounded the Flyers 45-29, grabbing 32 defensive boards to Dayton's 14. The Spiders used their height to dominate in the paint, scoring 22 points compared to the Flyer's six. Dayton struggled from the free throw line, connecting on less than half of their shots.
Dayton was led by Cyndi Stulls' 17 points and six rebounds.
Richmond travels to Philadelphia, Pa. to face La Salle University on Thursday, January 23, 2003. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
