01/23/2003 | Women's Basketball
Sophomore Kate Flavin (Englewood, Colo.) recorded her eighth double-double of the season, scoring 14 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead Richmond. Amber Goppert (Malone, N.Y.), one of three other Spiders to reach double-figures, scored 10 points to go along with eight rebounds and five assists.
La Salle was led by a career-high 30 points from sophomore Jill Marano, including a 4-4 performance from beyond the arc. Walker contributed 13 points for the Explorers.
La Salle took an early 9-4 advantage after back-to-back three's from Marano before Richmond took its first lead (13-11) with 11:53 on the clock off a trey from Araceli Gil (Santa Barbara, Calif.). The Spiders took their largest lead (5) midway through the first half before turning the ball over on three of their next four possessions, allowing the Explorers to retake the lead (22-19) with six minutes remaining. Shaune McLaughin hit her second three of the night to tie the game at 28 and set the halftime margin as neither team was able to score over the last three and half minutes of the first period. The Spiders failed to attempt a free-throw during the first 20 minutes of play.
La Salle would open the second half with a 13-2 scoring run capped off by two free throws from Marano after the Richmond bench was assessed a technical foul. The Explorers built the lead to 14 before a three-point basket from Elise Ryder (Dayton, Ohio) kicked off a 10-0 Spider scoring run which cut the deficit to four with 14:16 remaining. La Salle's defense limited Richmond to two points over the following five minutes and the Explorers once again took a double-digit lead. A trey from Gil brought the Spiders within five with just under four minutes left but Richmond would get no closer as the Explorers made nine of ten free throws to seal the victory.
La Salle went 10-11 from beyond the arc on their way to shooting 53.2% from the field. The Spiders outrebounded the Explorers 40-28, dominating 19-3 on the offensive glass.
Richmond returns to Pennsylvania on Sunday, January 25, to face Duquesne. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
