Pittsburgh, PA - University of Richmond senior Ebony Tanner (Garner, N.C.) hit two free throws with 12 seconds remaining in the game to lead the Spiders to a 66-63 win over Duquesne University this afternoon at the A.J. Palumbo Center. Richmond improves to 13-5, 4-3 in conference play as Duquesne falls to 10-8, 3-4 in Atlantic 10 action.
Tanner led the Spiders with 19 points and nine rebounds and now lacks four points to become the eleventh Richmond player to score 1,000 points. Sophomore Kate Flavin (Englewood, Colo.) contributed 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds and senior Elise Ryder (Dayton, Ohio) came off the bench to add 11 points after hitting a trio of three-point baskets.
Duquesne jumped out to an early 8-4 advantage before the Spiders took their first lead of the game at the 13:35 mark off an old-fashioned three-point play from Araceli Gil (Santa Barbara, Calif.). Duquesne went on a 17-9 scoring run to take its largest lead of the game (7) with just under seven minutes remaining. Richmond cut the deficit to two off consecutive baskets from Flavin and Ryder before retaking the lead. The Spiders outscored the Dukes 8-6 to close the half, which set the halftime margin at 35-32.
Richmond opened the second half with a 9-0 run but Duquesne tied the game at 43 off two free throws from Nicole Sinclair. Candice Futrell scored 12 of the Dukes next 16 points as the two teams exchanged leads for the following nine minutes.
The Dukes retook the lead with two and a half minutes remaining and a fast break lay-up from Beth Friday put Duquesne ahead 63-59. Gil hit a three-point basket with 28 seconds on the clock to put the Spiders up by one and a Richmond foul on the defensive end sent Futrell to the free-throw line for the one and one opportunity for Duquesne. Futrell missed the front end of the bonus and picked up a foul on the rebound to send Tanner to the line for two shots. She connected on both and Duquesne's last-second shot fell short as the Spiders left with the 66-63 victory.
Candace Futrell led Duquesne with 23 points, 17 in the second half, and Beth Friday recorded a double-double for the Dukes with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
The University of Richmond is back in action on Thursday, January 30, when they host Temple University at the Robins Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
