Richmond Baseball Earns Pre-Season Recognition

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond's baseball team received two preseason rankings, while three of the Spiders' student-athletes earned preseason All-America accolades.
Richmond, returning from a record-setting 53-13 season in 2002, is ranked 15th in Baseball America's preseason poll and 16th by Collegiate Baseball. This is the first time a Spider baseball team has earned a pre-season ranking since the program's inception in 1915.
A senior first baseman, Vito Chiaravalloti garnered Collegiate Baseball preseason first-team All-American. This is Chiaravalloti's second pre-season accolade. The NCBWA preseason All-America honoree earned NCBWA All-America First Team and All-East Region honors last year. He led the Spiders in home runs (23) and also broke the program record for RBI in a season (86) last spring.
Senior David Reaver earned Collegiate Baseball's second-team pre-season All-American. Reaver, a Baseball Weekly/USA Today second-team All-American and ABCA All-East Region, had a 34-game hit streak last year. He set records for at bats (266) and hits in a season (104).
Junior pitcher Tim Stauffer grabbed three preseason All-America honors. Stauffer earned Baseball America's, Collegiate Baseball's and NCBWA pre-season All-America team accolades. Stauffer, selected First Team All-America by four organizations in 2002, was the Atlantic 10 and Virginia Pitcher of the Year. The junior finished the 2002 campaign second in the nation in wins (15) and sixth in ERA (1.54). His innings pitched (146), strikeouts (140) and opponents' batting average (.208) all led the Atlantic 10. Stauffer broke five single-season Richmond records, including complete games (13), wins and strikeouts.
The Spider baseball team opens the 2003 season by hosting George Mason at 2:30 p.m. on February 18.
