UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - George Washington senior Erica Lawrence led all scorers with 16 points to lead the Colonials (6-5, 1-0) to a 55-49 win over the University of Richmond (9-3, 0-1) tonight at the Robins Center. This marks the Colonial's third straight victory over the Spiders with the games being decided by a total of 12 points.
Richmond saw three players score in double-figures as sophomore Kate Flavin (Englewood, Colo.) recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Amber Goppert (Malone, N.Y.) scored eleven points and senior Ebony Tanner (Garner, N.C.) chipped in ten.
The game's opening seven minutes were played on the defensive end of the court as neither team was either to connect on more than one basket. The Spiders took their only lead of the half (4-3) at the 14:08 mark off a leaning jumper in the lane from Cammy Desmond (Midlothian, Va.). George Washington went on an 8-2 run allowing the Colonials to build a nine-point lead with just under eight minutes remaining. The Spiders would get as close as five but George Washington rattled off seven points in a two-minute span to take a 13-point advantage, the largest lead of the half, before taking a ten-point lead at the half (31-21).
The Spiders scored on their first three possessions of the second half to cut the lead to four before George Washington's Lindsay Davidson responded with her second three-point basket of the night. Richmond went on 7-0 run to tie the game at 36 but missed their next six shots, allowing the Colonials to rebuild the lead to six points. With four minutes remaining, Flavin tied the game at 46 off a jumper from the top of the key but George Washington scored the game's next seven points before the final margin was set at 55-49.
The Spiders shot a season-low .355% from the field, including going 2-11 from beyond the arc. Richmond out-rebounded George Washington 39-31 and forced the Colonials into 18 turnovers.
George Washington's Ugo Oha contributed 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds towards the winning effort.
Richmond is back in action on Thursday, January 9, at 7:00 p.m. as they host Fordham University.
