Women Cruise to 84-66 Win over Fordham

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Junior Amber Goppert (Malone, N.Y.) scored 19 points and dished out six assists to lead Richmond (10-3, 1-1) to an 84-66 victory over Fordham University (9-5, 0-2) tonight in Atlantic 10 conference action at the Robins Center.
Goppert reached double-figures for the sixth consecutive game, tying her season-high of 19 points, and pulled down nine rebounds. Senior Cammy Desmond (Midlothian, Va.) scored a season-high 18 points to go along with six rebounds. Elise Ryder (Dayton, Ohio) scored 12 points for the Spiders, connecting on four of four from three-point range. Kate Flavin (Englewood, Colo.) and Ebony Tanner (Garner, N.C) also scored in double-figures for Richmond, scoring 12 and ten points, respectively.
Fordham quickly jumped out to an 8-2 lead after scoring on four consecutive possessions but Richmond took their first lead of the game at the 15:11 mark off a lay-up from Goppert. Fordham kept the deficit under five until the Spiders hit back-to-back three-point shots to take a 27-19 advantage with just under seven minutes remaining in the half. The Rams cut the lead to four before Richmond went on a 13-8 scoring run to take a 40-31 advantage into the locker room at the half.
Richmond opened the second half scoring seven points before Rider was able to get on the scoreboard with a jumper from Monica Mack. The Spiders took their first 20+point lead with 15:09 on the clock as Ryder connected on her fourth three-pointer of the night. With time expiring on the shot clock and a defender in her face, freshman Araceli Gil (Santa Barbara, Calif.) hit her fifteenth three of the season to give the Spiders a 68-49 lead with eight minutes remaining. Richmond maintained a 20+ point advantage for the majority of the half as the Spiders cruised to the 84-66 win.
Richmond committed a season-low 12 turnovers while recording 23 assists. The Spiders shot 55.9% from the field and were 8-13 from three-point range.
Fordham senior Mobolaji Akiode scored a career-high thirty points to lead all scorers.
Richmond travels to New York to face St. Bonaventure on Sunday, January 12 at noon. The game will be broadcast on A-10 television.
