UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond field hockey team continued its win streak as it edged out city rival Virginia Commonwealth University, 2-1, this afternoon at Crenshaw Field. The Spiders have won their last eight contests and post the best record in program history, 16-2.
Richmond got on the board first when senior Lydia Decembrino (Hummelstown, Pa.) recorded her second goal of the season, off a penalty shot 52 seconds into the game. Sophomore Whitney Wells (Clayton, Del.) scored, what would eventually be the game-winner, at 19:50 off an assist from sophomore Michelle La Force (Centreville, Va.) to put the Spiders on top 2-0 at the half.
In the second half, senior Nikki Cappetta scored the Rams (10-8) lone goal at 51:50 when she swept a shot passed Richmond goalie Michelle Swartz (Severna Park, Md.) and into the corner of the goal.
The Spiders are back in action hosting Duke, for the final home contest of the season, at noon on November 1st. Prior to the game Richmond's two seniors will be honored in a brief pre-game ceremony.
