PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The University of Richmond field hockey team earned their second consecutive Atlantic 10 Championship with a 3-1 win over Temple this afternoon in the title contest. With the win, the Spiders (18-3) will host NorPac champion California in a play-in game on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Senior Lydia Decembrino (Hummelstown, Pa.) scored the game's first goal off a penalty stroke midway through the first half. Temple withstood UR's early pressure and responded with a goal less than four minutes later to knot the contest at 1-1. Freshman Amanda Florio (Flemington, N.J) added an additional tally off a pass from Whitney Wells (Clayton, Del.) to give the Spiders a 2-1 halftime advantage.
Freshman Heather Wrublesky tallied an insurance goal at the 55:19 point to set the final score at 3-1.
Richmond controlled action at both ends of the turf, outshooting Temple 21-2 and holding a 9-3 advantage on penalty corners.
Sophomore Allie Howard (Lancaster, Pa.), the A-10 Offensive Player of the Year, was tabbed as the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
The All-Tournament Team consisted of Saint Joseph's Courtney Huff, West Chester's Kendra Wood, Temple's Dannon Mehaffey, Melissa DeCesaris and Haley Dervinis and Richmond's Inge van Bogerijen (Zeist, The Netherlands), Lesley Russell (Dallas, Texas) and Colleen Wevodau (Annville, Pa.), along with Howard, Decembrino and Wells.
