Women's Basketball Blown Over by Miami 80-73

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Despite a 22 point, 12 rebound performance from junior Kate Flavin, the University of Richmond women's basketball team suffered a 80-73 loss to University of Miami this afternoon at the UM Convocation Center. The Hurricanes remain undefeated, improving to 9-0 while the Spiders fall to 6-3.
In addition to Flavin, two other Spiders recorded double-digits in the scoring column as sophomores Araceli Gil and Saona Chapman added 15 and 14 respectively.
Miami senior Chaniva Broussard scored a career-high 32 points for the Hurricanes and Shaquana Wilkins recorded a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
The Spiders scored just two baskets in game's first six minutes as Miami held a 20-8 lead at the 12:55 point. Richmond reduced the deficit to single digits off Gil's three-point basket with under ten minutes remaining but Miami scored eight unanswered points and held a 15 point advantage at the 6:20 mark.
Richmond committed 12 first half turnovers with the Hurricanes scoring 18 points off the Spiders' mistakes to take a 39-27 halftime lead.
Miami held their largest lead of the game (20) with just over six minutes remaining in the game before the Spiders outscored the Hurricanes 19-6. During a three-minute span, Flavin scored 12 consecutive points for Richmond. The Spiders hit a trio of three point baskets late in the game to set the final score at 80-73.
Richmond shot a season-high .933 percent from the free throw line, connecting on 14-15 attempts.
The Spiders are back in action on Sunday, December 28 when they host William & Mary at 2:00 p.m.
