Men's Tennis Falls to #53 Memphis, 6-1

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The 53rd-ranked University of Memphis Tigers defeated Richmond 6-1 this afternoon at the UR Tennis Complex. With the loss the Spiders fall to 5-8 on the season.
"This is the best that we have looked against a highly ranked opponent," head coach Steve Gerstenfeld commented after the contest.
After a 15-day break in action, the Spiders looked strong at the #1 and #2 doubles positions, falling by only two in both matches. At the #1 spot, David Donn (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and Matt Cabana (Plantation, Fl.) lost 8-6 to Ben Stapp and Lee Walker, currently ranked 20th in the nation. Derek Schwandt (Kennett Square, Pa.) and Niki Doll (Heidelburg, Germany) took the set to extra points but were defeated 9-7 in the #2 position.
In singles action, Doll topped Joe Schmalian in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4, to win the point at the #2 position. Both Schwandt and Jeppy Moss (Fredericksburg, Va.) split their first two sets at the #4 and #6 spots, respectively, but were unable to earn the victory in the third.
The Spiders face Liberty University on Wednesday, March 12, at 2:30 p.m.
