#20 Lacrosse Suffers 12-10 Loss to ODU

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond (0-3) fell 12-10 to Old Dominion (3-1) this afternoon in college women's lacrosse action at Crenshaw Field. The Spiders held an 8-7 advantage at halftime but offensively struggled during the second period, scoring only two goals.
The Monarchs were led by senior Melody Shotwell's seven goals, including the game-winning score with just over four minutes remaining.
Seven players scored for the Spiders with juniors Polly Purcell (Ellicott City, Md.) and Libby Berlacher (Villanova, Pa.) and freshman Caroline McGuire (Darien, Ct.) each tallying two a piece.
The Spiders jumped to a 3-1 advantage after scoring two goals in a span of three seconds. Berlacher contributed her first goal of the afternoon at the 6:24 mark and on the ensuing draw, McGuire gained possession and raced down the field to put the ball in the net. The Monarchs got within one off Shotwell's first tally but Richmond scored three unanswered goals and held onto a 6-2 advantage.
Dolan's score set the margin at 7-3 but the Monarchs scored the next four goals, including three from Shotwell, to knot the game at 7-7. For Richmond, Purcell responded 20 seconds later and set the halftime score at 8-7.
In second half action, with the score tied at 10-10, Shotwell scored her sixth goal of the afternoon to give ODU the one-point edge at the 55:55 mark. The Spiders were unable to convert on the offensive end and Shotwell's final goal with :15 on the clock sealed the Monarchs victory.
The Spiders host Atlantic 10 foe Duquesne on Sunday, March 16 at 12:00.
