No. 10 Baseball Grabs Home-Opening Win, 5-3

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Spiders' freshman Ben Zeskind (Miami, Fla.) and junior Bobby LeNoir (Wilmington, Del.) launched two centerfield triples in the 5-3 win over Delaware State. Richmond improves to 3-0, while the Hornets fall to 1-8.
After three scoreless innings, senior rightfielder Vito Chiaravalloti (Middletown, N.J.) smashed his second homerun of the season in the bottom of the fourth. Classmate David Reaver (Union Bridge, Md.) added to the Spiders' lead, scoring the second run of the afternoon.
Richmond continued the tally in the fifth. On first baseman Jim Fasano's (Horsham, Pa.) single to right field, Zeskind scored the third Spider run.
After being beamed by Hornets pitcher Shawn Phillips, junior Bryan Pritz (Wilmette, Ill.) plated on the first triple of the afternoon at Pitt Field. Sending in the game-winning RBI, Zeskind stroked his first three-base hit of his collegiate career.
Senior leftfielder Michael Galligan (Woodbury, N.Y.) added to his home run total, delivering his second of the season over the left field fence. In the same inning, second baseman LeNoir placed the second triple just in front of the center field fence.
Richmond sophomore starter Tim Rice (Brookfield, Conn.) threw 5.1 innings and struck out seven batters. Spiders' right-handed reliever Andy Givens (Bel Air, Md.) earned the win to improve to 1-0. Givens fazed five batters and allowed only one hit in 2.2 innings.
Delaware State batted around in the top of the sixth, scoring all three runs of day. Hornets' sophomore righty Phillips took the loss falling to 1-2.
Richmond returns to action tomorrow, Monday, March 3 in a doubleheader against Virginia at Pitt Field. First Pitch is scheduled for Noon.
