CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Freshman Ben Zeskind (Miami, Fla.) went 2-4 with two doubles, but it was not enough as Virginia (18-8, 5-3 ACC) defeated Richmond (20-5, 4-1 A-10) 11-4 at Davenport Field. Richmond captured the season series 2-1, sweeping a doubleheader at Pitt Field on March 3.
After Virginia took a 1-0 lead in the first, Richmond responded with a pair to assume a 2-1 lead in the top of the second. Senior Michael Galligan (Woodbury, N.Y.) stroked a single to score Zeskind and tie the contest. Second baseman Bobby LeNoir (Wilmington, Del.) then plated catcher Adam Tiball (Bethesda, Md.) on another single to give the visitors a 2-1 lead. Virginia answered in their part of the frame, knotting the game 2-2. Cavalier third baseman Ryan Zimmerman came home when the Spiders attempted a pickoff on UVA's Chris Sweet.
The game got away from Richmond in the bottom of the fifth as the Cavaliers batted around and scored eight runs to take a 10-2 lead.
The Spiders cut into the lead in the sixth and eighth with a run in each frame. In the sixth, Tidball doubled and scored on a LeNoir sacrifice fly. Galligan belted a double into right field to plate David Thomas (McLean, Va.) for the Spiders' fourth and final run in the eighth.
Sophomore southpaw Tim Rice (Brookfield, Conn.) started for the Spiders, striking out five in 4.1 innings. He took the loss and fell to 3-1 this spring. Cavalier pitcher Andrew Dobies improved to 6-0 after striking out seven Spiders in 5.0 innings.
The Spiders belted four doubles in their first night game of the season.
Richmond returns to action tomorrow, Wednesday, April 2, at James Madison. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
