No. 17 Baseball Routs Liberty, 15-5

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - First baseman Jim Fasano (Horsham, Pa.) went 3-for-3 with a home run and four RBI and centerfielder Bryan Pritz (Wilmette, Ill.) scored four runs while going 3-for-5 with 2 RBI in Richmond's 15-5 win over Liberty. Leading the charge with Fasano and Pritz, shortstop David Reaver (Union Bridge, Md.) went 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs. Richmond improves to 28-7, while Liberty falls to 10-24.
Richmond jumped to an 8-0 lead in the bat-around first. Pritz started things off with a single. Liberty pitcher Richard Johnson then walked three Spiders to score Pritz. With the bases loaded and no outs, senior Vito Chiaravalloti (Middletown, N.J.) singled, scoring Reaver. Chiaravalloti then advanced to second on a wild pitch and third on a throwing by Flames catcher Erich Cloninger, while Fasano scored on the throwing error. Catcher Adam Tidball (Bethesda, Md.) touched home on a Bobby LeNoir (Wilmington, Del.) double to centerfield. Pritz reached base on the second Liberty error by third baseman Joshua Butcher. Reaver finished the inning's scoring, singling through the left side to score LeNoir and Pritz.
The Spiders added three more runs in the third frame to increase the lead to 11-0. LeNoir led off, beating out a bunt. After Reaver walked, Zeskind hit a sacrifice fly to score LeNoir. Fasano then ripped a two-run homer over the centerfield fence.
Liberty put two runs on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth and added another three in the sixth. A.J. Van Slyke stroked a triple down the left field line to score Daniel Bote and Joshua Butcher in the fourth frame. In the sixth, Flames designated hitter Phillip Laurent singled to start the inning. Laurent then cross home on a Van Slyke double. Second baseman Larry Wayne York reached on an error by Zeskind and Van Slyke scored. York touched home for the fifth Liberty run on a single by Chad Bryan.
Richmond answered in the seventh and eighth with two runs in each frame. Reaver singled to left field and moved Pritz to second. Both base runners then advanced on a failed pickoff attempt by Liberty pitcher Jon Banke with Pritz scoring and Reaver stopping at third. Fasano sent Reaver in for the 13th run on a single up the middle. In the eighth inning, Pritz belted a two-run homer over the fence to take a 15-5 lead.
Sophomore righty Derek Duclos (Exton, Pa.) earned his first win of the season after 5.0 innings. Duclos (1-0) allowed five hits and two earned runs, while fanning five. Liberty's Ryan Johnson took the loss after allowing five earned runs in the first inning.
Richmond returns to action this weekend at La Salle. The Spiders play a 3:30 p.m. single game on Friday, April 18. The teams conclude the series with a Noon doubleheader on Saturday, April 19.
