Women's Lacrosse Holds Off La Salle, 12-7

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Seniors Katie Dolan (Towson, Md.) and Kristy Gallagher (Chatsworth, N.J.) each scored three goals to lead the University of Richmond to a 12-7 victory over La Salle this afternoon at Lacrosse Field. The Spiders improve to 9-6, 4-2 in the Atlantic 10 while the Explores fall to 2-12, 2-4 in the league.
In addition to Dolan and Gallagher, five other players tallied goals for the Spiders. Freshman Caroline McGuire (Darien, Conn.) registered two scores and Libby Berlacher (Villanova, Pa.), Jen Cielewich (Severna Park, Md.), Kristen Habicht (Baltimore, Md.) and Polly Purcell (Ellicott City, Md.) each contributed one goal. Purcell led Richmond with four assists.
La Salle's Tracy Guenther put the Explorers on the scoreboard first with her score just two minutes into the contest. The Spiders took a 2-1 advantage off tallies from Berlacher and Purcell but La Salle evened the score at 2-2 with five minutes left in the half. Richmond closed the half with four unanswered goals, from four different players, to hold a 6-2 lead the break.
The Explorers opened the half with two tallies from Emrich to cut the deficit to two before Purcell assisted on two consecutive goals to put the score at 9-4. Each team would score three additional goals to give the Spiders the 12-7 win.
La Salle was led by Kim Emrich's four goals.
Freshman goalkeeper Jennifer McGibbon (Acton, Mass.) recorded five saves for the Spiders.
Richmond will play St. Bonaventure in its final home game of the season on Friday, April 25, at 3:30 p.m.
