UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond women's tennis team earned a third-place finish in the Atlantic 10 Championships after playing a demanding schedule that included six nationally-ranked opponents. The Spiders ended with a 9-9 record, 3-1 in conference action.
Finishing third in the Atlantic 10 Championships, Richmond compiled a 2-1 mark during the three-day tournament. The Spiders opened tournament play with a 4-1 win over Fordham before falling to Temple, 4-2, in the semi-finals. Richmond earned the third-place finish with a 4-1 victory over top-seeded Xavier.
The University of Richmond would like to thank seniors Vanessa Bagnato (Manhasset, N.Y.), Casey Cohen (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) and Monika Peets (Tallin, Estonia) for their four years of hard work and dedication. The group recorded 41 wins during their careers and were the 2002 Atlantic 10 Champions.
Vanessa Bagnato played in 74 spring dual matches for the Spiders and compiled a 48-36 mark. This year, she went 7-9 in singles action, playing at the #1, 2 and 3 positions. In doubles play, Bagnato teamed with fellow senior Peets to post a 3-3 mark at the #1 slot. A member of the 2002 All-Atlantic 10 Team, she received a national ranking of #124 as a junior.
Casey Cohen appeared in 79 overall matches at Richmond and was the only Richmond player record a perfect 3-0 record at the 2003 Atlantic 10 Chmpionship. She went 5-2 in #4 singles on her way to a 9-9 mark in spring dual matches. She teamed with Courtney Klein to go 4-1 in #3 doubles and posted a dual match doubles record of 5-5.
Monika Peets played in 25 spring dual matches after battling injuries throughout the majority of her playing career. As a senior, she recorded a perfect 5-0 record at #5 singles and also played at the #6 spot. She posted a 6-4 doubles record, playing with both Bagnato and Courtney Klein.
