UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Sophomore Kate Flavin (Englewood, Colo.) was named to the 2003 VaSID Women's Basketball second team as voted on by the Virginia Sports Information Directors' Association.
Flavin, a member of the All-Atlantic 10 second team, led the team in rebounding with 10.3 boards per contest and her 14.5 points per game were second-best. One of only three players in the conference to average a double-double, the forward registered 16 on the year. Against William and Mary, she set new career-highs in both points and rebounds with 24 and 22, respectively. Her 217 total defensive rebounds this year established a new single-season mark and her 111 offensive boards equaled the record. She was one of three Richmond players to start all 32 contests and played 40 minutes on 13 different occasions.
The two-time Atlantic 10 Player of the Week finished among the top-5 in six conference statistical categories. She ranked first in field goal percentage (.564), second in rebounding (10.2), second in steals (2.12), third in defensive rebounds (6.78), fifth in assist/turnover ratio (1.39) and fifth in offensive rebounds (1.39).
Richmond finished with a 21-11 mark, the program's first 20-plus win season in 12 years, and advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2003 WNIT. The Spiders, recording their first-ever post-season victories, also received votes in national polls for the first time since the 1990-91 season.
