Baseball Falls To William and Mary, 5-3

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Pinch hitter David Thomas (McLean, Va.) ripped a two-RBI double in the ninth, but it was not enough for Richmond to rally. The Spiders lost 5-3 at William and Mary in their final regular-season contest. Richmond falls to 42-12, while William and Mary improves to 30-17.
The Spiders will return to action this weekend as the number one seed in the Atlantic 10 Tournament at Dodd Memorial Stadium (Norwich, Conn.) As the top seed for the second consecutive year, Richmond will receive a first round bye. The Spiders will play the winner of #4 Duquesne vs. #5 Xavier on Friday, May 16 at 12:30 p.m. Live stats will be provided.
After three scoreless innings, William and Mary's Michael Brown belted a solo home run in the fourth for a 1-0 Tribe lead.
In the sixth, second baseman Bobby LeNoir (Wilmington, Del.) beat out a bunt, stole second and advanced to third on a David Reaver (Union Bridge, Md.) infield single. Freshman Ben Zeskind (Miami, Fla.) then ripped a double to right centerfield to score LeNoir and knot the game at 1-1.
The Tribe broke the tie in their four-run seventh. After John Lentz scored, designated hitter Mitch Walk ripped a three-run homer to right field.
The Spiders attempted a rally in the ninth, scoring two runs. Designated hitter Chris Dolan (Holmdel, N.J.) reached base after being hit by Bill Bray. A.J. Board (Raleigh, N.C.) then stroked a double to left field, sending Dolan to third. Thomas belted a double to left centerfield with two-outs to keep the inning alive and score Dolan and Board for a 5-3 score.
Freshman Brad Loveless (Ellicott City, Md.) started for the Spiders, throwing 5.2 innings and allowing five hits and one run. Reliever Matt McLoughlin (San Diego, Calif.) took the loss after .2 innings of work. The junior righty (6-4) gave up three runs and one hit. Bray (4-0) earned the win in relief for the Tribe.
