04/25/2026 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond baseball team collected the team's fifth win in a row Saturday at Pitt Field, defeating crosstown rival VCU, 8-4. With the victory, the Spiders have also won a fifth-straight Atlantic 10 Conference series on the season.
Richmond, now 25-18 on the year and 12-8 in league play, goes for the series sweep of VCU, 22-20 on the season and 11-9 in conference action, Sunday with first pitch set for 1 p.m. at Pitt Field and on ESPN+ to wrap up Alumni Weekend.
Joey Giordano had a strong outing on the mound and got run support early. Giordano went seven innings, including starting with five scoreless frames, allowing three runs on seven hits, a hit batter and struck out three to capture his nation-leading 10th victory.
Evan Wilson got the run support going in the first, hitting a 400-foot solo home run, his eighth of the season, to deep center field.
In the third, Michael Elko doubled to right center to push Wilson, who reached on a walk, to third. VCU intentionally walked Dylan Winebrenner to load the bases for RJ Johnson Jr. Down to his last strike, Johnson Jr. laced a double down the right field line that bounced all the way to the corner and cleared the bases. Trying to advance on the throw to the plate, Johnson Jr. was thrown out at third after Winebrenner scored.
VCU picked up three runs in the top of the sixth on three hits.
Richmond responded in the bottom of the sixth. Johnson Jr. led off with a double, hit third hit of the day, to left and Sean Scanlon was hit by the first pitch of his plate appearance. Chris Schaller loaded the bases with a single to left center. With no outs in the inning, RJ Rickabaugh went deep, depositing his second home run of the season into the outfield plaza in right field for a grand slam.
Giordano retired the Rams in order in the seventh before handing the game over to Chayse Gruber for the final two innings on the mound. Gruber allowed one run on four hits and struck out two to wrap up the victory.
