Spider Baseball Drops Series Finale to VCU

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond baseball team dropped the Atlantic 10 Conference series finale Sunday, 2-1, to crosstown rivals VCU at Pitt Field. The loss snaps the Spiders five-game winning streak.
Richmond moves to 25-19 on the season and 12-9 in conference play. The Spiders are hitting the books for finals week before heading to Davidson, 23-18 on the year and 14-7 in conference play, for a league series beginning Friday, May 1 at 5 PM.
VCU tallied a run in the first, taking advantage of a lead off double and Richmond miscue.
Richmond got on the board in the third in a similar fashion. With the bases loaded on three straight singles, a run scored on a VCU miscue to tie the game.
Jackson Hinchliffe had a strong day on the mound for the Spiders, scattering two runs on two hits, one walk and one strikeout in seven innings of work in the loss.
The Rams scored in the fourth on a lead off double, moved up on a sacrifice bunt and a ground out behind the runner.
Richmond had nine hits and left 10 on base, including eight in the first five innings. RJ Johnson Jr. had a three-for-three day at the plate and was hit in his fourth plate appearance. Evan Wilson had two hits, including a double for UR's only extra base hit.
