UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, VA - Sophomore Emma Bradley (Kybybolite, S. Australia) scored the Spiders' (1-0) winning goal to guarantee their victory, 3-2, against Vermont (0-2), in Richmond's season opener at Crenshaw Field this afternoon.
Richmond went ahead, 2-0, in the first half with unassisted goals from sophomores Allie Howard (Lancaster, Pa.) and Whitney Wells (Clayton, Del.). After Vermont goalie, Ariel Eber, recorded a save on Wells' first attempt, she was able to score off the deflection.
In the second half, Vermont senior Molly Sheehan scored off of a penalty shot, just five minutes into the half, hitting the ball past Richmond goalie, Michelle Swartz (Severna Park, Md.), and into the right corner of the goal. The Catamounts second goal, off a Spiders' defensive breakdown, came from freshman Elizabeth Berry with an assist from sophomore Merrie-Beth Maynard.
Bradley's game-winning goal, off a penalty corner, occurred with 3:54 remaining and assists were credited to Howard and junior Laura Hur (Chevy Chase, Md.).
The Spiders outshot the Catamounts 12-5. Howard recorded five of the 12 and freshman Inge van Bogerijen (Zeist, The Netherlands) claimed four. Penalty corners were also in Richmond's favor, 9-1.
