
Field Hockey Defeats American in Double OT

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, VA - Senior Lydia Decembrino (Hummelstown, Pa.) scored the game-winning goal, a penalty stroke in double overtime, to give Richmond (2-0) the 2-1 victory over American University (1-1) this afternoon at Crenshaw Field.
After a scoreless first half, Richmond sophomore Allie Howard (Lancaster, Pa.) scored the game's first goal, hitting the ball past American goalie Laura Miller at the 43:51 mark.
The Eagles' freshman Heidi Hershberger answered with a goal off a penalty corner at the 59:17 point to tie the game 1-1. Assists were credited to sophomores Maureen Daniel and Shannon Goans.
In the second overtime, Decembrino's penalty stroke swept past Miller and into the left corner of the goal after 88:57 minutes of play.
Richmond goalie Michelle Swartz (Severna Park, Md.) recorded six saves compared to Miller's two. The Spiders outshot the Eagles 12-8.
Richmond is back in action on Sunday, September 7th hosting Lafayette College with game time scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
