Field Hockey Victorious Over Stanford

WILLIAMSBURG, VA -University of Richmond field hockey defeated Stanford, 5-2, this evening in a neutral-site game on William and Mary's Busch Field. The win improves the Spiders' record to 3-1, while the Cardinal drops to 2-4.
Stanford scored the first two goals of the game on a pair of penalty corners. The first came at the 12:08 mark with Aska Sturdevan scoring on assists from Cara-Lynn Lopresti and Lyndsay Erickson. Less than five minutes later the Cardinal scored again, as Lopresti and Erickson each picked up another assist on a score by Keely Machmer-Wessels.
However, the Cardinal lead was short-lived, as Richmond scored five unanswered goals, including three in a span of 3:29. The Spiders' first goal came at the 18:28 mark, as Whitney Wells (Clayton, Del.) swatted the ball out of the air and into the cage. UR tied the game just 66 seconds later when Inge van Bogerijen (Zeist, The Netherlands) shot from ten yards out into the top right corner of the goal. Wells scored the game-winner at the 21:47 point, putting away the rebounded shot of teammate Colleen Wevodau (Annville, Pa.). In the second half, Wevodau scored a goal of her own, giving the Spiders a 4-2 lead. Richmond mid-fielder Allie Howard (Lancaster, Pa.) completed the scoring with a goal off a penalty corner at 52:47.
Richmond outshot Stanford, 18-7 in the contest, while the Cardinal held a 7-6 advantage in penalty corners. Spider goalie Michelle Swartz (Severna Park, Md.) made two saves, while playing the entire 70 minutes.
Richmond is back in action on Sunday, September 14th hosting William & Mary with game time scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
