College Park, MD - #20 University of Richmond field hockey defeated Harvard 3-2 in College Park, MD on Saturday afternoon. The Spiders improve to 5-1 with the win while the Crimson drop to 3-1.
Richmond staked out a 2-0 lead heading into halftime. Colleen Wevodau got the Spiders on the board at 4:54 after she was able to dribble into the right circle and loft a shot up and over Crimson netminder Katie Zacarian and into the left side of the cage.
Inge van Bogerijen gave Richmond a two-goal cushion at 33:36 when she rifled a shot off of a Spider penalty corner that found the back of the cage. Sophomores Allie Howard and Michelle La Force assisted on the goal.
Harvard outshot Richmond 8-3 in the first half, but Spider netminder Michelle Swartz came up with five saves to keep the Crimson off the board.
Richmond added to its lead with a goal from Emma Bradley at 42:10. Howard sent the ball down from the top of the circle to Bradley on the left post and she was able to bat it out of midair past Zacarian.
The Crimson's best scoring opportunity was thwarted when Lydia Decembrino came up with a defensive save on a shot by Jen McDavitt.
Tiffany Egnaczyk finally got Harvard on the board at 54:50 when she converted on a penalty stroke, her second of the season. She brought the Crimson to within one when she carried the ball just inside the circle and blasted a shot past Swartz for an unassisted tally at 68:12.
Swartz finished with nine saves in the win. Zacarian made one for the Crimson.
