Women's Basketball Falls to Temple 72-70 in OT

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond women's basketball team suffered a 72-70 overtime loss to Temple University in Atlantic 10 women's basketball action tonight at The Liacouras Center. The Owls, with their fifth consecutive conference win, improve to 9-7 overall, while the Spiders fall to 13-5, 5-2 in the conference.
Flavin recorded her third consecutive double-double with 26 points and ten rebounds. Senior Amber Goppert and freshman Christina Campion also reached double-figures with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
Freshman Britney Jordan led the Owls with a career-high 27 points and two players recorded double-doubles.
The Spiders held a 9-0 lead at the 15:32 mark before Temple got on the scoreboard with an offensive putback from Ari Moore. Richmond held a double-digit lead (19-9) after DeUnna Hendrix's jumper with just over ten minutes remaining in the half. After a three-minute drought in which neither team scored, Goppert's basket gave the Spiders a 14-point advantage.
Temple's Jordan scored six consecutive points to bring the Owls within six before the halftime score was set at 31-23.
The Owls opened the half with an 11-6 scoring run to reduce Richmond's lead to two with 14:54 on the clock. The Spiders responded with two consecutive old-fashioned three point plays from Araceli Gil and Flavin to rebuild their lead to eight (43-35).
Again Temple got within two but the Spiders held onto a slight advantage during the following eight minutes of play. Jordan connected on a trio of three point baskets in three-minute span to keep the Owls within reach.
Candice Dupree gave Temple its first lead of the game off a lay-up at the 3:28 mark. Gil tied the game at 62 with a short jumper in the lane but the Owls retook the lead with a pair of free throws from Dupree. Saona Chapman forced the extra period when her lay-up tied the game with under three seconds on the clock.
In overtime, Temple's Moore hit one free throw with three seconds on the clock to the put the Owls up 72-70. The Spiders' inbound pass was intercepted at mid-court and Temple claimed the win.
The Spiders shot 50% from the field but failed to hit a three-point basket.
Temple outrebounded Richmond 39-30.
The Spiders are in action on Sunday at noon when they take on La Salle in an Atlantic 10 televised game.
