PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Despite over twenty points each from both junior Kate Flavin (Englewood, Colo.) and sophomore Saona Chapman (Voluntown, Conn.), the University of Richmond women's basketball team fell to La Salle 70-67 this afternoon at Tom Gola Arena. With the victory, the Explorers improve to 9-8, 2-5 in the conference while the Spiders fall to 13-6, 5-3 in the A-10 after their second consecutive conference loss.
Flavin led all scorers with 22 points and Chapman contributed 21 off a 4-7 performance from beyond the arc. Freshman Christina Campion (Hamilton Square, N.J.) added 16 points for the Spiders.
Jill Marano led the Explorers with 17 points and dished out a game-high 6 assists.
La Salle jumped to quick 5-0 lead before Flavin scored six unanswered points to put the Spiders on top. Richmond held its largest advantage of the game (20-14) after a jumper from Flavin with just over ten minutes remaining. The Explorers regained the lead just three minutes later off a three-point play from Monica Garrido Sanz, her first points of the game.
La Salle built a six-point lead as the Spiders went three minutes without a score until Flavin ended the drought with a pair of free throws with 4:46 on the clock. Kat Foley hit a lay-up with one second remaining to set the halftime score at 38-33.
Less than two minutes into the second half, the Explorers took a double-digit lead off Meghan Wilkinson's steal and fast-break lay-up. La Salle held the advantage until Chapman connected on a three-point basket with 53 seconds left that put the Spiders up by one point.
Ten seconds later, sophomore Davineia Payne hit a lay-up to put the Explorers back up by one and was fouled on the play. She missed the free throw attempt and the Explorers kept possession with Garrido Sanz's offensive rebound. With 11 seconds left, Marano missed a ten-foot jumper but La Salle regained possession as the ball went out of bounds was and last touched by Richmond.
Three quick Spider fouls sent Marano to the line for the one-and-opportunity and she connected on both to put the Explorers ahead 70-67. Chapman missed a desperation shot with two seconds left and the Explorers held on for the win.
The Spiders outrebounded La Salle 35-32 with 12 offensive boards.
Richmond returns to Philadelphia next weekend to face Saint Joseph's at 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 1.
