Women's Basketball Eludes Xavier with OT Win

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Sophomore Saona Chapman scored 28 points, including 11 in the extra period, to lead the University of Richmond women's basketball team to a 82-79 overtime win over Xavier this evening at the Cintas Center. With their second consecutive conference victory, the Spiders improve to 10-3 overall, 2-0 in the A-10 while the Musketeers fall to 8-5 and open conference play with a 0-2 mark.
Junior Kate Flavin totaled 16 points and nine rebounds for the Spiders and sophomore Araceli Gil added 13.
For Xavier, Suntana Granderson and Tara Boothe scored 24 a piece as Granderson connected on six three-point baskets including one as time expired to force overtime.
Richmond took its first double-digit lead of the game at the 14:20 point off a three-point basket from Gil. Xavier tied the game at 22-22 after the Spiders missed five of six shot attempts but regained a four-point advantage with consecutive jumpers from Chapman and freshman Christina Campion.
Boothe's lay-up at the 2:21 mark gave the Musketeers a one-point advantage (31-30) but Xavier would not score again as the Spiders took a 35-31 halftime lead.
Xavier regained the lead four minutes into the second half off a pair of free throws from Adeola Olanrewaju but Richmond held as much as an eight point lead over the following eight minutes of play. With under five minutes remaining, Xavier cut the deficit to four but freshman DeUnna Hendrix's three-point basket as the shot clock expired restored Richmond's lead to seven.
Granderson connected on her fifth trey to give the Musketeers a one point advantage with :42 on the clock lead but Chapman put the Spiders back on top with a driving lay-up and a pair of free throws with eight seconds remaining. Granderson sent the game into overtime with a three-point basket at the buzzer that set the score at 69-69.
In the extra period, the game reached its fifth tie (71-71) at the 3:55 mark and neither team scored during the next two minutes. Chapman hit back-to-back threes to give the Spiders a six point edge with 40 seconds left and connected on five free throws in the final 20 seconds to give Richmond the 82-79 win.
Richmond shot .561 percent from the the field and dished out 23 assists.
The Spiders were outrebounded 32-31 with the Musketeers grabbing twice as many offensive boards (10-5).
Richmond is back in action at the Robins Center on Friday, January 9 when they host Rhode Island at noon.
