No. 11 Field Hockey Drops Saint Joseph's, 5-1

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The 11th-ranked Richmond field hockey team won its fourth-straight contest Sunday, topping Saint Joseph's, 5-1, in front of 450 people at the Hawks' Finnesey Field. The Spiders move to 10-2 on the season with the win, and improve to 2-0 in conference play. The Hawks drop to 6-5 on the season and 0-1 in the A-10.
Junior Whitney Wells put the Spiders on top at the 17:10 mark in the first half when she maneuvered through the Saint Joseph's defense for her sixth goal of the season. Junior Holly Cram helped Richmond move its lead to 2-0 at the 24:15 mark with her 12th goal of the season.
The Spiders held a slight advantage in shots at halftime, but Richmond's keeper, junior Michelle Swartz proved to be the difference stopping five shots to move her shutout streak to 280 minutes.
Saint Joseph's limited the Spiders to just eight shots in the second half, but Richmond capitalized on three of them. Cram used a rebound to score her 13th goal of the season, putting the Spiders up 3-0 at the 39:18 mark. Freshman Erin Arthur scored her first goal of the season with more than 20 minutes to play. Wells again scored for the Spiders on one of their five second-half penalty corners.
The Hawks' broke Swartz's shutout streak with 12 seconds remaining in the game when Nicole Anonini scored off a broken penalty corner attempt.
Cram ended the game with a team-high seven shots, while Wells tallied a total of three attempts on the day. Swartz ended the match with seven saves, and her shutout streak was halted after a total of more than 314 minutes.
The Spiders return to Crenshaw Field next weekend for two Atlantic 10 matches. Saturday, Oct. 16, Richmond hosts West Chester at Noon., and Sunday's match, Oct. 17, against La Salle is scheduled for Noon.
