VILLANOVA, Pa. - Richmond head coach Dave Clawson believes there are two major factors in capturing a football game - winning the turnover battle and making more big plays (25 yards or more) than your opponent.
On Saturday, 24th-ranked Villanova (4-3, 1-3 Atlantic 10) dominated both aspects en route to a 49-10 victory against the visiting Spiders (2-4, 1-2 A-10). Wildcat sophomore quarterback Marvin Burroughs enjoyed his second stellar game against Richmond, throwing five touchdowns for the second consecutive year.
The Spiders turned the ball over four times to Villanova's one. The Wildcats scored 28 points off those Richmond turnovers.
The fireworks began early when Burroughs connected with Terry Butler on a 31-yard touchdown pass on just the fourth play of the game. The Spiders responded with an eight-play drive that culminated in a 29-yard field goal from Carter Ball at 10:24 of the first quarter.
Richmond then moved the ball 73 yards on 15 plays to take their only lead, 10-7, on a Stacy Tutt one-yard run with 10:47 to play in the half. On that drive, Tutt and senior Jake Schools converted a 26-yard reception, the Spiders only "big play" of the game.
Both teams traded punts before the Wildcats' struck again, this time on a 42-yard pass from Burroughs to Chris Polite. Terrance Reaves then picked off Tutt on the Spiders' 26 and the Wildcats's Butler ran it in from three yards out to treat the home crowd to a 21-10 halftime lead.
Villanova secured the contest with a 21-point third quarter. Tutt fumbled on the first play of the second half and then Burroughs found Polite again to increase the advantage to 28-10 with 13:39 still to play in the third quarter. Polite's only two receptions went for 73 yards and two scores.
Two touchdown receptions by J.J. Outlaw (11, 32) pushed the lead to 42-10 after the third stanza. Villanova recovered a John Richardson fumble and went seven yards, finishing the drive with an Aaron Jones' three-yard run, to complete the scoring with 5:45 remaining.
Burroughs was 18-of-23 for 260 yards through the air. Outlaw was his favorite target, catching five balls for 78 yards and two touchdowns.
