AMHERST, Mass. - The 11th-ranked Richmond field hockey team secured its third consecutive Atlantic 10 crown Sunday afternoon in Amherst, Mass., by topping UMass 7-0. The win moves Richmond to 14-2 on the season and marks the third-straight year the Spiders have gone undefeated in their six A-10 regular season matches.
"I felt the team played inspired today," head coach Ange Bradley said. "Our first three goals came within a minute and a half of each other and really set the tempo for our team."
Junior Holly Cram got things started with her 21st goal of the season using an assist from junior Whitney Wells at the 4:29 mark. Less than 30 seconds later sophomore Heather Wrublesky found the back of the net for the first time this season, making the score 2-0. Sophomore Amanda Florio then pushed the Richmond lead to 3-0 at the 6:02 mark on a rebound goal.
"It was a great team effort," Bradley added. "This team really wanted to be the regular season champs and it showed in a great team game of hockey."
Wells put the Spiders in front 4-0 before halftime when she used a rebound from junior Colleen Wevodau's initial shot in the 25th minute.
Richmond came out in the second half and posted two goals less than a minute apart. Cram scored her second of the game and 22nd of the season on one of Richmond's 12 penalty corners. Juniors Allie Howard and Michelle La Force picked up the assist on the successful push and stop.
Cram now is tied atop the Richmond single-season goals list with Dawn Reyerson's 22 scored in 1993. The Glasgow, Scotland, native also became the Spiders single-season points leader with 51. Her four points pushed her past Reyerson's 50 in 1993.
Freshman Shannon Taylor helped the Spiders put their sixth and seventh goals on the board in the 54th and 57th minutes. The Midlothian, Va., native scored her first of the game on a six-yard shot from the left. Her final goal of the day came on an assist from freshman Erin Arthur after a Spider penalty corner.
"Massachusetts has a great facility and we are excited to be going back in two weeks and try to become the overall Conference champion." Bradley said.
Richmond will play its final regular season match, Saturday, Oct. 30 at Crenshaw Field. Start time against Appalachian State is set for 2:30 p.m. Seniors Danica Haupt and Laura Hur will be recognized prior to the start of the match.
