UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond juniors Holly Cram and Allie Howard have been honored as members of the South Region's All-America First Team. The two join 14 other athletes on the regional team announced by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Tuesday.
"This is truly a great honor," Cram said. "I would swap it for the chance at advancing further in the NCAA Tournament. It is just a shame that an individual gets the award because it was a great team effort the entire year. Everyone of my teammates deserves this award."
Cram earned Richmond's fourth-consecutive A-10 Offensive Player of the Year honor prior to the Atlantic 10 Championships this season. Currently, she ranks second in the nation in points (67) and points per game (3.19). The Glasgow, Scotland, native ended the season as Richmond's single-season goals leader and single-season points leader. The junior also finished atop of seven offensive categories in the Atlantic 10 and currently is tied for third among the national leaders in goals (29) and goals per game (1.38)
"I am honored to receive this recognition," Howard said. "It is a reflection of our team and the great season we had. I felt we improved in every facet of the game this season. I wouldn't have had this opportunity if it wasn't for my teammates."
Howard, the Atlantic 10 Conference's Offensive Player of the Year in 2003, won the Spiders' first conference Defensive Player of the Year honor since 2002 earlier this season. The A-10 Championships' Most Outstanding Player, currently ranks in a tie for 17th among the national leaders in assists with 12. She ended the season among the Top-3 in the Atlantic 10 in points (28) and assists (12). The Lancaster, Pa., native ranked tied for sixth in the conference with eight goals and was tied for the team lead in assists. Howard led a defensive effort for the Spiders that limited opponents to just 16 goals on 135 shots, including just three goals on 29 shots during conference play.
Richmond wrapped up its season Saturday falling to top-ranked and top-seeded North Carolina, 3-0, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Spiders finished their season with a mark of 18-3 after recording their third-straight undefeated Atlantic 10 Conference Championship.
